How to Maintain Your Garden: A Guide for Mini-Apprentices 🌿

At Evergreen, we believe a garden isn’t just something to look at, it’s a living, breathing world to explore. We spend our days designing and maintaining some of the most beautiful landscapes in Cheshire, but we know that the most important “gardeners of the future” are currently at home, perhaps looking for a half-term project!

If you’re a Mini-Apprentice (that’s anyone with a pair of wellies and a bit of curiosity), this guide is for you. Here is how you can help keep your garden looking “Evergreen” professional.

1. The “Hydration Hero” (Watering)

Plants get thirsty just like you do, especially when the sun is out!

  • The Secret: Don’t just splash the leaves; aim for the roots (the bottom of the plant). That’s where the plant “drinks.”
  • The Pro Tip: Use a watering can instead of a hose. It helps you see exactly how much water each plant is getting.
  • The Test: Stick your finger into the soil about 2cm deep. If it feels dry and dusty, your plant needs a drink!

2. The “Deadhead Detective” (Pruning)

This sounds scary, but it’s actually a way to help flowers grow back even stronger.

  • The Mission: Look for flowers that have turned brown, crunchy, or “sad.”
  • The Action: Using your fingers (or safety scissors with an adult), “pinch” the stem just below the faded flower.
  • Why? This tells the plant to stop wasting energy on the old flower and start making a brand new, colourful one!

3. The “Weed Warrior” (Weeding)

Weeds are “gatecrashers”—plants that grow where they aren’t invited and steal all the food and water from your flowers.

  • Identification: Look for things that don’t match the rest of the flowerbed (like dandelions or stinging nettles—watch out for those!).
  • The Move: Grasp the weed as close to the soil as possible and pull straight up. You want to get the root out, otherwise, it might grow back like a garden villain!

4. The “Bug Hotel Inspector” (Wildlife)

A professional garden needs “helpers” like bees, ladybirds, and worms.

  • The Check: Look under leaves or near log piles. Do you see any ladybirds? They are the “Security Guards” of the garden because they eat tiny pests (aphids) that hurt the plants.
  • The Task: If you find a “bare” patch of soil, leave some twigs and dried leaves there. You’ve just built a 5-star hotel for beetles!

A Note for the Grown-ups

National Children’s Gardening Week is all about passing on the joy of the outdoors. At Evergreen Cheshire, we pride ourselves on creating spaces that families can grow into. Whether it’s a bespoke play area or a pristine lawn for a game of football, a garden is the heart of the home.
